AI, Tourism, and Culture
Innovation Design Workshop for the Future of Tourism with AI: the story of the MASTER COMACINI builders, protagonists of an international tourist destination where the artisanal culture made in Italy has created places to dwell in beauty.
The TIME TRAVEL LAB is part of the new technological laboratory project ‘Campus LakeON‘ by IATH Academy.
The chosen theme is the COMACINI MASTERS, known since the early Middle Ages as master builders, the protagonists of Lombard Romanesque architecture, who spread innovative solutions in Italy and Europe.
Laboratory results:
- A virtual cathedral in the metaverse, accessible on smartphones, through the creation of one’s own avatar. In the cathedral, unprecedented iconographic cycles generated by artificial intelligence are visible, narrating the story of the Comacini Masters with a pictorial language that evolves from the Early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Si tratta di un immaginario inedito sviluppato con AI Generativa (AI RE-GENERATIVE ART). La cattedrale virtuale è visitabile a questo link.
- The digitization of works by the Comacini Masters present in the Lake Como area through shots with 360 cameras and gigapixel technologies in ultra-high definition. This is VR technology usable with a headset that allows the valorization of the art of building, decorating, and creating the beauty of the cathedral masters. Link to Sant’Abbondio in Gigapixel.
- The creation of images made with Generative AI to reproduce Comacini masters’ construction sites with a cinematic language and a historical approach that enhances sources and eliminates “fantasy” and “fake” contributions.

- The prototype of a tourist itinerary of the Comacini Masters, in the form of an immersive guide, consultable by tourists both on-site and remotely before the trip. The tour includes a bike itinerary, Lake navigation, and walking and consists of 20 stops with explanatory QR codes on self-standing panels. This is an innovation design of tourist products homogeneous when extended to the national (and international) territory.
The innovative results of this laboratory will be presented during the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Conference, which will take place at Cometa (Como) from April 22nd to 24th, 2024.
